The Heat Transfer and Alternative Energy Systems Group at NIST typically employs 2-3 co-op students during each semester to help with projects.  Students work closely with project leaders to carry out experiments, analyze data, and develop new equipment and software.  Working as a co-op student in the group provides an excellent educational experience to complement coursework taken at a college.  Students develop numerous skills in such areas as experimental design and execution, engineering analysis, heat transfer, electronics, fluid mechanics, and computing.

Students typically spend at least 3 semesters here at NIST over the course of their co-op tenure.  Because of the vital role that co-ops serve in our group, we look for students who will be able to work during spring and fall semesters as well as during summer terms.  Students should therefore be able to alternate assignments at NIST with time back at school.  Specific schedules are flexible and can be tailored to the student’s needs.

To fill these slots, we seek undergraduate students majoring in an engineering or science-related field.  Employment at NIST requires that you be a citizen of the United States.  Students should check with their cooperative education office for more details regarding the specific requirements of their respective programs.

If you would like to apply for employment, please send a resume to the group’s co-op coordinator listed below.  The next open positions will be available in the summer and fall terms of 2008.

Comments from past co-op student:

Once again, thanks for giving me this opportunity to work at NIST.  I think the educational and character-building experience I have received here will benefit me for years to come.  I feel like I have been treated more like a full time engineer this term, which is a real honor since I have yet to obtain a degree.”
