Fellowship from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)

Samuel Manzello from the Fire Metrology Group of the BFRL has recently been selected to receive a fellowship from JSPS Invitation Fellowship Programs for Research in Japan. This prestigious fellowship is one of only 16 fellowships granted in engineering sciences in 2008. Manzello’s host institute will be the Building Research Institute (BRI). As a JSPS fellow, Manzello’s research will focus on using the Fire Research Wind Tunnel Facility at BRI to conduct wildland-urban interface fire research. In addition to this, collaborative research into the performance and failure of gypsum/steel stud wall assemblies will be conducted using full-scale furnace facilities at the Center for Better Living of Japan. JSPS, founded in 1932, initially as a non-profit foundation through an endowment granted by Emperor Showa, is an independent administrative institution whose main functions are to foster young researchers, to promote international scientific cooperation, to award Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, to implement the Research for the Future Program, to support scientific cooperation between the academic community and industry, and to collect and distribute information on scientific research activities. JSPS plays a pivotal role in the administration of a wide spectrum of Japan’s scientific and academic programs. While working within the broad framework of government policies established to promote scientific advancement, JSPS carries out its programs in a manner flexible to the needs of the participating scientists. JSPS’s operation is supported in large part by annual subsidies from the Japanese Government.
