International Space Station Flies NIST Nanocomposites

After months of preparation, NIST polymer nanocomposites have been deployed on the International Space Station by NASA during the STS 123 shuttle mission. Polymers containing nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and nanoclays were prepared at BFRL in cooperation with the U.S. Naval Academy and the Air Force Research Laboratory, with partial funding through the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The goal of the program is to evaluate how these nanoparticles can protect various composites from a low earth orbit (LEO) environment, where atomic oxygen, thermal cycling, vacuum ultraviolet (UV) radiation and high orbital velocities combine to cause severe degradation of most materials. The shuttle and the international space station orbit in LEO. This joint program employed high-temperature ionic liquids developed by the team as surface modifiers for the nanoparticles. This enables preparation of high quality nanocomposites with superior mixing of the nanoparticles in the polymer. Such research may lead to new materials that can enable light-weight space-hardened composites for space structures. Similar materials are also being studied in BFRL for terrestrial applications in UV and oxidation resistant coatings for less flammable furniture and more durable firefighter apparel.

Persily Elected ASHRAE Vice President

Andrew Persily of the Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Group in the Building Environment Division was recently elected for a one-year term as a vice president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air- Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). His election was announced and his installation took place at ASHRAE’s annual meeting in June 2008. ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of 55,000 persons. Its sole objective is to advance through research, standards writing, publishing, and continuing education, the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. In his capacity as vice president, Persily will chair the ASHRAE Technology Council, which is responsible for standards development, research, and related technical activities.

Lytle Receives Painter Award

Alan Lytle was recognized by SES and the American Society for Testing and Materials International with the Robert J. Painter Memorial Award, for his standards work for 3D Imaging Systems. This award is presented to the individual contributing the most outstanding service in a given year in the field of standards. The 2008 presentation will be held at the 57th SES Annual Conference in San Diego, Calif., on Aug. 18, 2008. Lytle was assisted in his standards work by Geraldine Cheok and Kamel Saidi, who both received service awards from the ASTM June 2008 meeting.

Rossiter Recognized With William Cullen Award

The ASTM D08 Committee on Roofing and Waterproofing gave Walter Rossiter the William C. Cullen Award “in recognition of his distinguished contributions and personal commitment to Committee D08 and to the field of roofing and waterproofing through his extensive research, prolific publication, and exemplary leadership.” This is the D08 Committee’s highest award, and is named in honor of Bill Cullen, who worked for over 30 years in Building Materials at NBS/NIST. The award was presented to Rossiter at the D08 meetings in Denver, Colo., on June 23, 2008.

Bates Award Goes to Stutzman

Paul Stutzman received the P.H. Bates Memorial Award by the American Society of Testing and Materials Committee C01 on Cement for his paper, “Phase Analysis of Hydraulic Cements by X-ray Powder Diffraction: Precision, Bias, and Qualification,” published in June 2007 in the ASTM Journal. His research supported the successful introduction of a new X-ray powder diffraction standard for cement using Rietveld analysis, for which Stutzman won a FY07 NIST Bronze Medal. He received the Bates award in Denver, Colo., on June 27, 2008.

Bushby Elected ASHRAE Fellow

Steven Bushby of BFRL’s Building Environment Division has been elected fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This award recognizes distinction in the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, airconditioning, and refrigeration technology. Bushby was recognized for his research on integrated and “intelligent” building control systems that have led to national and international standards and a new generation of commercial building control products used in over 80 countries.
