BFRL and CSTLWork with PNNL to Virtually Evaluate Biosampling Strategies

NIST’s BFRL and CSTL and the Statistics and Sensor Analytics group of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) collaborated under a project funded by the Department of Homeland Security to develop and demonstrate a method to evaluate biosampling strategies using building simulation. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate the use of software tools to virtually examine a wide range of biological contaminant release and dispersion scenarios and to develop a process for creating and evaluating sampling strategies. The number and locations of samples to collect within a building were determined using statistically based evaluation methods. NIST researchers used the CONTAM building airflow and contaminant transport software to simulate approximately 400 agent release scenarios on a single building. The scenarios varied by contaminant release location (indoor and outdoor) and amount, weather conditions, and building system operating conditions. These simulations produced a set of building contamination patterns that were then analyzed by researchers at PNNL using their Visual Sample Plan software. This project was a first step in demonstrating a powerful new tool that enables the use of virtual experimentation to address a wide variety of release and building operation scenarios which in turn enable pre-event planning and selection of sample designs based on knowledge of factors that affect contaminant dispersion in a building.
