December 2002
BFRL Monthly Highlights
BFRL Releases Enhanced Version of Airflow and Indoor Air Quality Modeling Software
The Building and Fire Research Laboratory has released CONTAMW, a multi-zone airflow and contaminant transport simulation program. It can be used to assess the adequacy of ventilation rates in a building, to estimate the impact of building envelope tightening efforts on infiltration rates, and to predict contaminant concentrations to estimate personal exposure based on occupancy patterns in the building being studied. New features of the program include: the ability to control HVAC airflows based on temperature, pressure and contaminant concentrations, the ability to simulate non-trace contaminants such as water vapor, and to solve larger scale problems through an enhanced numerical solver. CONTAMW is available for download on the Web at www.bfrl.nist.gov/IAQanalysis.

BFRL Supports Solar Decathlon
BFRL staff provided significant support to the Solar Decathlon 2002, held on the National Mall in Washington D.C. from Sept. 26-Oct. 6, 2002. Fourteen student teams from the United States and Puerto Rico competed to design and build homes that would capture, convert, store, and use solar energy to supply all of the energy needs for their home. Hunter Fanney served as one of three members of the Engineering Design Panel that evaluated the design and construction of the solar energy systems, the energy conservation measures in each home, and the integration of the systems within the building structure. Two of his staff, Ken Henderson and Merle Guyton, evaluated the solar electrical systems within each home. Sponsors of the Solar Decathlon included the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy laboratory (NREL), BP Solar, Home Depot, Electronic Data Systems, and the American Institute of Architects. Additional information describing the Solar Decathlon, the teams, and winners, can be found at www.solardecathlon.org.
