BFRL Holds Foam Consortium Information and Planning Meeting
The Fire Research Division of BFRL held the Foam Consortium Information and Planning Meeting on Nov. 12-13, 2008. This was in response to intense interest in upholstered furniture flammability following the conclusion of the first Foam Flammability Consortium. The meeting was attended by 25 potential Foam Consortium members, which were representatives from companies such as Arkema, Applied Nanoworks, Barrier Advantage, Boeing, Foamex, Supresta, and several scientists and engineers from the Consumer Products Safety Commission. The meeting presented important technical results that relate to the flammability of polyurethane foam. New results on nanoparticle-based flame retardants, which reduce the heat release rate of polyurethane foam, were presented along with important results on large-scale flammability tests on fabric and foam combinations. Experimental results were shown that demonstrate that an intense fire can occur when highly flammable fabrics and fibers are used in combination with polyurethane foams, even when the foams are highly loaded with flame retardants. The Foam Consortium plans to begin work in early 2009.
