BFRL Fundamental Research Serves as Basis of CUA Ph.D.

Fundamental research in BFRL’s Thermal Machinery Group has served as the basis for a Ph.D. thesis in Mechanical Engineering at the Catholic University of America. On Dec. 4, 2002, Matthew Carr successfully defended “Experimental and Theoretical Study of Surface Tension Effects on Extended Surface Condensation.” The experimental and theoretical investigation was conducted under the direction of BFRL’s Mark Kedzierski. The impetus for Carr’s thesis was to help the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry better understand and predict the vapor-space condensation heat transfer enhancement mechanisms of a standard and advanced passively enhanced heat transfer surface. This work can be used to reduce chiller manufacturers’ first cost by permitting designers to size condensers more accurately.

Carr’s Ph.D. dissertation is among other Ph.D. and M.S. degrees obtained in 2002 based on Thermal Machinery Group research, and is the fourth Ph.D. degree obtained in as many years on studies characterizing thermodynamic cycle efficiency and heat transfer performance.

BFRL Develops Database for GSA

BFRL’s Office of Applied Economics has partnered with the GSA Public Building Service’s Environmental Strategies and Safety Division to promote construction waste recycling. The result is the Construction Waste Management Database Web site that contains a searchable database of almost 2,000 construction waste recyclers nationwide.

The database contains the name, location, and other key information on companies that haul, collect, and process debris from construction projects. A user can search the database by company, city, state, and material(s) accepted. The database is the first to include an all-in-one list of construction waste recyclers.

The site has been accessed over 2,400 times since its August 2002 launch. It is available at http://cwm.gsa.gov.
