BFRL Helps New Fire Service Standard Display Essential Information for Incident Commanders and First Responders

The National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA) recently released SB 30-2005, Fire Service Annunciator and Interface. SB 30 was developed jointly by BFRL, NEMA, and the U.S. fire alarm industry. SB 30 covers the design, operation, and arrangement of equipment intended to display essential data and status of building systems for use by firefighters. It will increase life safety by providing firefighters with the conditions of the building where a fire emergency is occurring prior to their arrival on-scene. Demonstrations of the application of this technology were conducted at NIST with the help of the NIST fire and police departments and in Wilson, N.C., with the assistance of the Wilson Fire Department, Wilson Medical Center, and Honeywell.

BFRL Revises Heat Pump/Air Conditioner Test Procedure Used for DOE Regulations

On Oct. 11, 2005, the Department of Energy (DOE) published an updated procedure for testing and rating residential air conditioners and heat pumps. The DOE test procedure is used to estimate the cooling and, for heat pumps, heating seasonal efficiencies (SEER and HSPF, respectively). These efficiencies help the buyer compare products and are used to regulate manufacturer’s minimum performance levels. NIST proposed a list of needed changes, drafted the revised test procedure, and then acted as a technical consultant to DOE during their rulemaking process, including resolving public comments and drafting a final revision. Throughout the process, NIST personnel worked with industry members and energy advocates to develop the specific content of the revised test procedure.
