Visit From Chairman of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

On May 21, 2009, the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Gregory Jaczko, visited the Large Fire Laboratory at NIST-Gaithersburg to view a fire experiment involving electrical cables typically used to control equipment in nuclear power plants. Also in attendance was Patrick Gallagher, NIST Deputy Director. The cables used in the experiment are a vital part of the safe operation of a nuclear reactor, and the experiments were aimed at evaluating the performance of the cables in a fire. The chairman shared his thoughts on the visit in his first blog post, “Safety Culture and Fire—AWeek at the NRC”:

“Last week was not all hard work at the Commission table. I also had a chance to visit NIST’s facilities in Gaithersburg to see some experiments related to fire protection. These experiments are helping to develop technical data that will improve our ability to model fires in nuclear power plants. The experiments really bring home the fact that we continually strive to enhance our knowledge in order to support our safety mission. Fire protection is an important area for nuclear power plants and one I will continue to focus on in my new position.”

Persily Receives ASHRAE Award

Andrew Persily of the Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Group in the Building Environment Division has received an Exceptional Service Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air- Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This award, which recognizes ASHRAE members who serve the society faithfully and with exemplary effort, is based on Persily’s contributions in the areas of standards development and technical activities. The award makes note of his leadership as chair of the committee responsible for ASHRAE Standard 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, and his membership on key technical committees related to indoor air quality, building protection, and standards development. In particular, the award recognized his contributions to Guideline 29, Risk Management of Public Health and Safety in Buildings, and the Indoor Air Quality Design Guide that will be published later this year. The award was presented to Persily at the annual society meeting in June 2009.
