BFRL’s Walton Named ASHRAE Fellow
George Walton of the Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Group in the Building Environment Division was named a fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) at their winter meeting in January 2006. This award, which recognizes distinction in the arts and sciences of environmental technology, is based on Walton’s research leading to the development of building simulation software for energy, airflow, and indoor air quality analysis. The award made note of his many contributions to the field of building simulations, including the development of the room heat balance method behind the first building energy load program, BLAST; the first simulation program that simultaneously calculated heat loads and airflows in multizone buildings, TARP; and the combination of these airflow calculations with contaminant mass balance analysis in CONTAM. As a result of this work, CONTAM has become the multizone airflow and indoor air quality model of choice throughout the world. It has been used for many years in the design of smoke control systems in buildings, and more recently, CONTAM has been employed to evaluate building vulnerability to chembio attacks.
