NIST Engineers Support Local High School Robotics Program
Kamel Saidi and Kent Reed of BFRL have joined Kevin Lyons of MEL and Michel Laverne of ITL to serve as Engineering Mentors to the Colonel Zadok Magruder High School team entered in the 2007 FIRST Robotics Competition. Over the past several weeks, these engineers have advised, helped, and encouraged the team members and their faculty sponsor as they seek to solve the competition challenge. They are fulfilling, in part, the pledge of Secretary Gutierrez, made during the 2006 Championship, to support the FIRST program. Secretary Gutierrez visited the high school in January 2007. The FIRST Robotics Competition is designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. It challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. More information can be found at http://www.usfirst.org.
