BFRL Holds Conference on Fire Research

On April 3-4, 2006, the Fire Research Division of BFRL held its conference on fire research at the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, Md. Approximately 100 participants from universities, government agencies, and the private sector heard more than 30 talks spanning a wide range of fire-related topics given by the staff of BFRL and its grantees. This event revived a tradition that began in 1977 under the auspices of the NBS Center for Fire Research. The theme of this year’s conference was “Roles of First Responders in Homeland Security.” An official from the Science and Technology Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Randall Griffin, gave the first keynote talk. Griffin summarized the DHS strategy for improving the preparedness of first responders. During the remainder of the day, the participants heard talks on performance standards for firefighting technologies, occupant egress from buildings, interactions between fire and structures, and developments in building codes and standards. During the break periods, the conference participants had the opportunity to view more than twenty posters that were on display in the hallway outside of the lecture room for both days of the conference.

Dougherty Receives ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award

Brian Dougherty of BFRL received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This award, which recognizes exceptional service to the Society, is based on Dougherty’s leadership in developing, maintaining, and improving methods of test for residential heat pumps and air-conditioners. Among his many achievements, Dougherty has led a team of industry representatives at the Department of Energy and the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute that work with the International Standards Organization to develop international standards for heat pumps and air-conditioners. Dougherty was also instrumental in developing performance metrics that capture the performance of advanced heat pump systems that provide domestic water heating in addition to space conditioning. The award, which consists of a plaque and lapel pin, will be presented at the Society’s June annual meeting in Quebec City, Canada.
