BFRL Helps Building Industry Harmonize Product Data Standards
The world’s first CIMSteel Integration Standards (CIS/2) to Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) translator has been developed in BFRL. This work supports an international effort to harmonize the principal product data standards in use in the building and construction industries. CIS/2 is the product data model for structural steel and has been endorsed by the American Institute of Steel Construction. IFC is the product data model developed by the International Alliance for Interoperability to facilitate interoperability in the building industry. The translator can generate IFC files of structural steel analysis, design, and manufacturing models. These files are being used by IFC software implementers to add new IFC import capabilities for structural steel and to coordinate structural steel with the rest of the building in IFC-aware software. The translator development was presented at the CIS/2-IFC Harmonization meeting in January and was demonstrated at the 2005 North American Steel Construction Conference. The translator and examples of its use can be found at http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/cis2.html.
