NIST Research Leads to California Building Energy Code Revisions
The 2008 revisions to the California building energy code, known as Title 24, include new compliance paths that credit the use of automated fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) technology developed and tested in the BFRL. Buildings account for approximately 40 percent of all energy consumed in the United States, more than either transportation or industrial uses. A substantial portion of building energy use is for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC). NIST research, in collaboration with several building control system manufacturers, has resulted in proven algorithms for detecting equipment faults and operational errors for specific types of HVAC equipment and controls. The California action is expected to speed the commercialization of this technology and motivate further research in FDD technology.
